Allen Meadow 90 (2021)
Moderate wood sets off ripe yet cool aromas of citrus confit, floral nuances and crushed fennel along with a hint of phenolic character. The rich, concentrated and relatively powerful medium-bodied flavors conclude in a balanced, clean, bone-dry and youthfully austere finale that is shaped by bright lemon-tinged acidity.
Antoine Vincent recounted that the 2021 growing season was "quite frankly brutal. We had several nights of frost in April and then on the 21st of June, Fuissé was just hammered by hail and when I say hammered, I'm not kidding as several of our vineyards literally had no yield at all. Indeed, in 2021 there will be no Combettes or Brûlés. After that, there were various disease attacks there were more a nuisance than serious but still caused us some angst. By this point, I was honestly relieved to just get to the harvest, which we began on the 15th of September. The weather forecast was for rain, so we picked as rapidly as possible and finished on the 30th. We sorted carefully and yields overall came in at about 25 hl/ha, which on the face of it isn't great but not catastrophic. Averages though often hide important details. For example, we made only 10 barrels from our 2.69 ha holding in Le Clos, which works out to barely more than 8 hl/ha! Potential alcohols were also variable at between 12 to 13.5%. As to the wines, they have changed substantially during the élevage and they're still changing. I like the style as it's fresh and bright, but I doubt that they're going to have the potential longevity of the 2020s." I repeat for readers who may have missed it, the former Tête de Cru has been rebaptized Tête de Cuvée effective with the 2018 vintage. Vincent said that the Château de Fuissé 2020s, revisited below, were bottled in May 2022.
